Funny Girls

14 Feb

As discussed in a post from a million years ago, I’m taking voice lessons so I can continue to flex my artistic muscles while pursuing a career that doesn’t involve a whole lot of belting on stage. But I’ve come to the realization that I oftentimes end up being more of a shiny new toy than a student to my instructors.

The first few weeks go something like this:

OOH, OOH! A  soprano! Here, take ALL THESE opera pieces that just have you bouncing around five notes above the staff!

Then the next few weeks tend to look more like:

OH WAIT, you have a decent sense of timing and you’re not afraid to make a fool out of yourself! Here, take ALL THESE musical theater comedienne  pieces!

And hey, I’m not complaining. I’d much rather sing a part with personality than another cardboard ingenue ballad. But… all of these characters seem to have quite a lot in common.

There’s Lina Lamont, with the high-pitched, Long Island accent:

Adelaide, with the high-pitched, Long Island accent:

We have Audrey, uniquely equipped with a lower iteration of the Long Island accent:

More recently added to the cannon is Elizabeth, with a high-pitched Megan Mullally accent:

My favorite lady Madeline switches it up from Long Island to Bavaria and uses a bigger range because she’s perfect at everything she ever did ever:

And of course, the incomparable Leslie Anne Warren as Norma Cassidy, with a shocking high-pitched voice and sounding very much like she’s from a bit farther east than Chicago.

All of these characters are hilarious and the women who portrayed them are all personal heros of mine, but… really… there is so much more to comedy than just slapping an obnoxious voice on a scantily-clad woman. Basically what I’m saying is Kristen Wiig and Tina Fey need to team up with the ghosts of Lerner and Lowe and start writing some versatile, musical, funny lady roles.
