On being an assistant, redux

19 Oct

In retail, the customer?

He* is always right.

In an assistant’s world, the boss?

He* is seldom right but never unsure of himself.

Both make requests, and neither can be refused.

But when asked “will you be around for a bit”

within a thirty minute window of your lunchtime,

“No.” your answer must always be.

For yes will see them leaving, you waiting for return,

And lunch consumed behind your desk,

as with envy at those outside in the sunshine, your stomach does churn.

Previously: On being an assistant

*Intended as a gender-neutral singular pronoun. (Which English REALLY NEEDS, btw.)
