Seasonal Firsts

11 Sep

In honor of the changing seasons and the return of Pumpkin Spice: a collection of our favorite firsts from every season.

Penny: After the first ice storm when the world is still shut down and the ice covered trees throw teasing glints of sunlight across the undisturbed snow. (Yea, that’s right. Country girl, right here.)

Polly: The first night it’s chilly enough to justify brewing some secret-family-recipe hot chocolate. (My sister and I perfected the formula over years of snow days.)

Penny: The first time you cut the grass and life just smells new.

Polly: The first day you can roll down all the car windows. Best celebrated by blasting the Legally Blonde soundtrack and paying no heed to the other drivers staring at you.

Penny: The first lightening bug (…firefly, whatever you want to call it). It’s the little things that light up the evening. (Ha. Hahahahha. Puns.)

Polly: The first evening where there is still a warm breeze after the sun goes down.  Early in the season the fireflies outnumber the mosquitos and the time is right for summer constellation viewing. At long last Polly can be reunited with her heart throb Perseus!

Penny: The first week like this, when it’s cool in the morning but pleasantly warm in the afternoon with clear blue skies devoid of the haze that’s been greying the blue since about June 15 and you can feel the promise of crispness starting to cut through the humidity of an East Coast summer. Also leaves.

Polly: The first blustery day when you swap out the iced coffee for something cozier and pair it with a fresh cider donut. Mmmm.

Changing seasons are all about nature and what you’re drinking.

Also you know you now have to make me that hot chocolate right?

I was referring to the movie soundtrack. Perfect Day is the best spring song!

True, true, but you also enjoyed the musical. Admit it.
